Don was born and raised in Salisbury, Wiltshire and began piano lessons at just 5 years-old. His mother was a pianist herself, but sent Don for lessons with a well-respected teacher, Lilian Mountford. By 12 he had achieved grade 8 and in 1961 was showcased on ITV’s talent show Homegrown.
At age 14, standing in the lobby of the West End Hotel in Salisbury, Don’s friends asked him to play something on the vacant piano. After only 10 minutes of playing, the hotel owner offered him a guinea a night to play every Saturday evening for the next 2 years.
Performing at the Hotel brought other opportunities and mixing with other musicians, leading to the formation of the Don Reynolds Trio. Don then started ‘The Premiers’ in 1966 and played all across the South until 1974, when a brief retirement quickly led to the formation of another band.
‘Recorded Delivery’ played with Don at the helm from 1975 until he retired from the Gigster’s life in 1992. Although he did still play various short-term roles in bands, most recently a Coldplay tribute band.
Don’s London College of Music diploma was secured in 1975 and he began to teach privately alongside playing in the bands. As of 2022, Don has taught over 2000 students and has never had student fail a practical exam.
Working at such schools as St Edmund’s Girls School, Highbury School, La Retraite and serving as Head of Music at Norman Court Prep School. Most recently Don was a peripatetic teacher for East Sussex Music Services working at 21 schools. Now Don exclusively teaches from his home in Burgess Hill.
Just to reiterate seeing as you've made it this far... Don is still as excited about teaching as ever. He is accepting new students - both children and adults. Please contact him to the start their musical journey or make a return to your own.
